Grateful Sunday

  1. Neighbors. Fun. Friendly. Weird. Needy. Giving. Lonely. New. Absent. Barking. Canadian. Green. Old. Moving. Awesome. Love you all.

  2. Lazy, no soccer Saturdays. Even though only at 10 AM, having fully uniformed for the "11 AM" games, did we discovered we had the week off, we still got to have an awesome lazy Saturday.

  3. Liz' 'Caramel Corn'. I made it yesterday, and thank goodness, didn't have the opportunity to eat it all (very little in fact, but Andy attests it was good). There is something about it, a trigger when you have a few kernels, that makes you want more, more, more. It is sooooo yummy!

  4. Dress shopping alone. Andy sent me shopping this afternoon. Yes, he really did. Once he said, "Go" and gave me my shopping parameters (one dress! nothing else) I was off like a bat out of...a cave. I tried on about 15 "fancy" dresses for the event this coming Saturday. The first one I tried, I ended up buying. I loved it best at first, but had to give the other's a shot.

  5. Boys. New haircuts (Holden, via Dad - he did a really great job!), amazing car artists (we have this 'Car' movie drawing pad, Owen does it all of the time, so today at church he was drawing, by memory, cars in all different colors, so cool! Thank you to Holladay Pre-K for emphasizing free drawing (no 'coloring pages') I seriously think just the mention of how important that is, by H's first year teachers, has helped developed this ability in my children. Of course, AK and his service to our family and lately a lot to our ward family - which I love seeing him do! Even if it means no naps on Sundays for Moi.

  6. A girl. Besides being cute and having the most adorable wardrobe for a 7 month old; her funny, dimpled, people loving, hungry, mountain/outdoor girl, personality is developing more everyday. And I now have a buddy for life (well after the pre-teen & teenage years when I will drive her mad, and then eventually she will love, adore, and appreciate me, right?). Well, until then, she has to come with me wherever I go, so she is stuck with me.

  7. November 3rd is almost here! I get to say Has ta La Vista baby to my very time consuming and lackluster time as a SLC Junior Leaguer (I will still be in a very mellow position dealing with by-laws and policies and procedures, until I take a "financial track" next year. And on November 3rd I get to wear aforementioned dress and party it up fancy museum benefit style with my favorite boy-man.

Grumpy Mail Lady

Dude! Seriously! I know it's possible to be cheerful and sweet and fold my mail nicely and simply place it in our mail slot, rather than shove it all in there so it splatters all over the entryway. Why I know, it's because your much sweeter, cheerful, and yes, friendly counterparts that "substitute" every once in a lotta whiles do it just fine. Yet you continue to ignore our friendly "hellos" and "thank yous" and cease not to complain about the mail slot - the latest - "the spiderweb keeps getting entangled and I keep having to undo it". Oh my gosh - like I am doing it to BUG YOU! ANd seriously, you've got to know I have a baby, you have seen her like 35 times, that is most likely sleeping, (since I am not feeding her or holding her but just sitting here with my computer in my lap, where you choose to usually ignore me) and she was while you rang the doorbell to demonstrate how the web was covering (not like strapping it shut or anything, seriously, like obtrusively and decoratively just happened to be "blowing in the wind") covering the mail slot. OM-Gosh, seriously, put the mail on the front porch if it bothers you so much! It will be easier for me to find my mail scattered all over the porch than all over my entryway and into the coat closet (where it may be lost for weeks!). So I let you know "yes, I have kids, that have fun with the webs" as if you've never seen a child before (because you act like you had no childhood). Maybe you didn't and I am so sorry about that, but seriously, choose to be happy! Don't let the stigma get to you. Friendly two guys that sub for you often (and I wish more often) seem to be okay with it!

On happy neighborly news, 2 new baby girls were born, just this week, on my little block! I am so psyched for P!

Name

A N tapas n E t T E
Thanks MarySue. I "flicked" around until I got this combination that I liked (it took about a minute, I am not that patient). The exercise made me think how I really like my name - thank you 'rents. I am named after my paternal grandmother and great-grandmother. The name is derived from the French, which I like and is probably the most likely reason I kept taking French, even through college. At some point it used to be the world-wide "business" language - probably in the 1800's, but I bought it - ooooh Benicio Del Toro - anywhoo. My name is quite unique - I knew 2 other girls in the 6 grades of high school with my name, and no one in elementary school, and no one I knew in college. My cousin even named her girl Annetta, so she must like me at least a little (because she's got to think of her crazy cousin Boo). Of course, my nickname is Boo. I don't know where I got that from, except babies really like 'Peek A Boo' and I must've especially liked it - or something. I like my nick name too.

Scones, Caramel Popcorn, & Wassail

Dude, need I say more! Without a picture, I will say more. What a day. I got to be at school and help out with the first grade homework bit for a bit. Then headed home for P's nap and some great breakfast clean-up and peace and re-grouping/week planning. Then off to pick-up darling O. Then off to the Cannery to pick up some jams and jellies I "earned" a ticket to buy by working a few weeks ago. After that, off to visit awesome Allie and her adorable girls and the old Farmington 'hood and have lunch and catch up. Returning home to nap sleepy P again and get O in his skeleton costume (which is quite tight, and he has been talking about wearing the dragon, which I think was Jake's?, we love having a dress-up/costume stash). Tried for a little reading/rest time, denied by a darling skeleton. Then started making the Wassail and Scone dough and going a little crazy once H got home, after finishing homework and running about with O doing everything but keep quiet for P's napping so I locked them outside. It was a beautiful day, and they aren't appreciating it and I needed the peace and quiet. It last for like 5 minutes, before they were banging on the door and ringing the door bell, I opened, they dropped in their masks, and then ran out again. I didn't have to lock the door again, and just watched them play out front and be creative and hilarious and boys (throwing the decor sticky eyeballs on the porch roof over and over, talking about E.T., Star Wars, wishing their were more leaves to jump in). I cursed the very sticky scone dough, and kept adding flour (Andy informed me as I complained later that it was supposed to be sticky). Andy got home at some point, took over and I zoned out for a few minutes, ate dinner, and fed P. Liz and the gang came over for FHE, did a little lesson, put P down for the night, carved some pumpkin, and ate up Liz' unbeatable caramel popcorn, AK's scones and the wassail. Delivered extra scones to the neighbors. Clean-up. Books for the kiddos. JL B&W Event conversation/planning. A little Corpse Bride with AK and off to bed. A day in the life.

Grateful Sunday

7 Month Old P, Showing off her sippy cup skills

More showing off "I can flip it, I can spin it"

Being cute and possibly thinking "my how wet and cold the water leaking all over my seat feels". Mom showing off her "Baby Boo" bib gift from Grammy Mary Sue! Interesting how she is the first child that has worn bibs (and I love them!) and eats in a highchair, I don't know how we fed those messy, squirmy, hungry boys!

Yesterday's fun with Awesome O and outfit (seriously, girls' clothes are the cutest! I love it!).
    Grateful Sunday
  1. Grateful that after today's performance, I will most likely never be asked to sing in this ward's Sacrament meeting again. As a family, and with another family, we sang "Love Is Spoken Here".
  2. Grateful for our awesome primary. I know, everyone's primary is awesome, but seriously, our little ward rocked the house today, with a super spiritual and cute Primary sacrament meeting. Owen was definitely the front row mischief kid (sorry Caroline for SO disrupting your "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" signing), but they both looked adorable and gave excellent (if even withholding a quite important scripture) talks.
  3. Grateful for a healthy, able body that is going to start exercising tomorrow! (I've taken a few too many weeks off!)

Pumpkin Patch

We did the pumpkin patch thing last night, our 4th annual trip with the Taylor's and were thrilled to have the Bunches there as well. The kids had a blast gathering all the pumpkins they could carry (we ended up with 4 or 5 "good carving face" pumpkins at $.22/pound), running around with the cousins (they think the Taylor kids are cousins, so that counts), getting lost in the maze (well, the maze was much smaller this year, so they figured it out quickly), talking to the fake guy (you had to be there), enjoying the friendships, amazing sunset, and mosquitos (well, not so much enjoyed, feared). Fun was had by all. Thank you Megan and JB for the photos.

Year Round Sunshine by Beverly Nye

I received this book as a Christmas gift from Andy's grandpa Al. It is awesome! When I was called as Welfare person in our ward, I kind of gathered my book resources looking for stuff to able the ladies to "fare well". This book's chapters are divided into the month's of the year, and on the heels of reading 'Animal, Miracle, Vegetable', it shows the in-season fruits and vegetables, how to preserve and save extra food, etc. Check out the website calender for aforementioned tips and click on the header to go to the home page.

A few tips from the book for October:

On Halloween, set-up a card table outside and serve warm cider and doughnuts to the parents. It's a great way to get acquainted. Beverly sets up her big electric fry pan and cooks scones.

Potato Block Painting - Cut a potato in half and carve out a design on the cut side. Put some food coloring on a moistened sponge, press the potato against the color on the sponge and stamp the design on paper.

Ghost writing - Write a message on white paper using a toothpick and milk or lemon juice. Let dry thoroughly. The note can be read by holding it close to a warm light bulb or running an iron over it. The heat will make the letters darken.

You get a complete protein when you combine a potato and milk product. (Hello baked potato with sour cream and chives!).

In other food news, Andy and I are whipping up our chili for the ward party tonight. We ended up using the Joy of Cooking recipe substituting ginger ale (as suggested by Beverly Nye) for the beer.

Saute in a large skillet until crackling and golden brown:
1/2 pound bacon, diced
Remove the bacon using a slotted spoon. In the dripping, saute briefly:
1/2 pounds round steak, coarsely ground or chopped in a food processor
6 to 12 large cloves garlic, coarsely chopped
2 large onions, coarsely chopped
Deglaze the skillet until foam disappears, with:
12 ounces bottle dark beer or ginger ale
Remove all to a large pot or Dutch oven. Stir in:
One 32-ounce can tomatoes, with juice
One 16-ounce can kidney beans, with juice
One 16-ounce can great northern beans, with juice
One 16-ounce can pinto beans, with juice
6 tablespoons ancho chili powder
2 tablespoons ground cumin
1 tablespoon ground black pepper
1 1/2 cups water or one 12-ounce bottle dark beer or ginger ale
Simmer for about 3 hours, covered, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Season to taste with:
Salt and ground black pepper
Red pepper sauce
Bacon
Serve with Sharp Cheddar Cheese and Corn Bread
Andy is so bugged right now, as he has been making lunch and trying to talk to me while 2 feet away, and I am in the blog zone, totally not listening and responding. Sorry AK.

Chickens

My darling friend Tausha lives about 2 miles away from me and has 3 chickens in her backyard (read about their soft bums here). I am so envious I could spit. I love that her little girl can go to the backyard in the morning and get a super fresh egg for breakfast from her very own chicken. She gave me some tips tonight and I thought AK would love it and be so on board since he was raised on some major farms. Okay I love Kenneth on 30 Rock (he was born in Macon, GA by the way). So Andy won't let me have chickens in the backyard. I mean it's been a total of 20 minutes since I first heard about Tausha's chickens and the 5 since I asked him for them, so I have some time to process and convince right? We have the perfect spot in the backyard. And it goes right along with 'Animal, Vegetable, Miracle' by Barbara Kingslover (which is cool people) and of course self-reliance (which honestly I hadn't thought of, but that's why Tausha the hens). Tausha recommended the book 'Chickens in Your Backyard' to begin. Can you imagine how much fun the kids would have with chickens? I am pretty psyched. This is the Place, hee hee, that the chickens came from (you get 8 or so chickens, and once they get bigger and you know which ones are the hens and roosters, you give back the roosters). Grammy Mary Sue can attest that 12 Bantams that end up being all Roosters is not that cool!).
What do you think y'all?

Myers-Briggs Test

Thanks Liz for the Myers-Briggs personality test link. Let's take it together shall we? I am a little afraid the result will simply be "Crazy".

Rainy Tuesday

Just showing P and her new spoon trick. She sat up on her own today, for a few seconds at least. We finally pulled in the hand me down (thank you Jackie) highchair a few days ago. She loves it. It puts her up high and she sits up really straight (excellent AK posture) and just looks out over her little kingdom of princes and servants. No teeth yet, but we are waiting for that since she has been waking up a lot during the night, which I allow only thinking "she'd better crack a tooth tomorrow". Oh well.

The next photo was taken on our way to hike on Saturday. We ended up stealing apples from an orchard instead. That is my home in the background (in our dreams!!!).

The next is our latest paint job. The color is 'Krypton' via Sherwin Williams. We also painted the entry ways 'Weathered Wood'. They are new and fresh and I love how the 'Krypton' shows off my awesome indoor plants. I love my plants. Mi Madre is the Queen of Indoor Plants, she taught me the ways. But I am having placement issues. Should I get some plant stands? Extra little tables, or just get some new pots (O picked out some awesome ones at C&T a few days ago, seriously he's good) and stick them on the floor?

Another question for AK: Who's got a non-vegetarian, manly, "Texas state fair winner recipe" Chili for a ward party on Saturday night.

Grateful Sunday

Zoo Trip late September. The fearless foursome and H & W being elephants.

  1. Paint and the effect it has on making my house my home. After 2 years (almost exactly) we've finally rid our upstairs walls of the all too familiar (from our last house) too light yellow, burgundy entry (I know I can't believe I left it that long either) and green kitchen. Okay, the green kitchen is looking better, but we do plan on painting it early next week. I'll post pictures and paint colors as soon as I can take a picture to show them.
  2. An in-house do it yourself hubby. This was 10 years coming, but we finally have started to do things on our own. Re-finishing floors to even picking our own paint colors. He is amazing and people keep asking for his help now and I'm like "dude", but I guess now I know a little what Megan must feel like having to dole out her husband and his mad work skills.
  3. Tivo - And not for what you think, it's for Conference baby. I can't get enough, but it was really nice to come home from church, do a little nursing while watching the tube, and instead of tuning into 'SNL' from the night before, I watched Elder Uchdorf and revisited Sister Beck's awesome talk. Yes, seriously, I know it's so hypocritical, coming home and watching 'SNL', I have issues.
  4. Knobby Knees - On the heels of Kate's H blogs about the kiddos getting older and bigger, I checked out H's legs today and he had these big boys knees and legs. I couldn't believe it. I keep telling them they are not allowed to get bigger, and they keep getting bigger.
  5. Little Brothers - Every time H masters a skill, or practices something, from chin-ups to reading and writing, I can see a twinkle in O's eye that comes from his brain that is thinking "I've got to do that!". Lately, he's been working on his letters, totally on his own, copying from books, sky-writing, everything. I keep telling him, "dude, you are 4, you don't need to write yet, draw a picture", but this kid keeps on writing. He can now write "the zoo" and he wrote "hoezel zoo" and "Halloween" quite amazingly, I just told him the letters to write. I'm not trying to brag, it's almost kind of freaky, like seriously I showed or told him how to write "the zoo" like once, 2 weeks ago, and he just did it on his own yesterday. He reminds me of a certain man we call "Chuckles" and his "photographic memory" of which he is in denial of, but seriously, he remembers everything. O's still trying on the chin-ups, but he's getting there.
  6. The power of the Priesthood in my home. My dh is amazing. He gave an awesome talk in church today, alongside his awesome EQ President and fellow counselor. They are quite a trio of great men.
  7. Many more things if I just continue to sit here and babble on and on and on...and on.

Bike Ride

It's 8:05 in the morning, I am at Kate's, breaking the fast, since I was on a bike ride but all but one of her kids wasn't awake when I arrived at 7:45 or so. I love my new winter bike pants and shirt though, since it is pretty cold. See how boring this is totally not worth it right. I have blog-block now. But Kate found a really funny lady blog you've got to check out. My personal fave is "ghetto pinata" since we love our birthday pinatas, and her newest post. Here she is.

So, about the blog fast, it was good. I blog stalked a little, but really did enjoy spending more time reading to my kids at bedtime and not being a zombie-mom the second AK walked in from work until I went to bed. I've read a lot this week. I am reading "How to win friends and influence people" by Dale Carnegie for book group. It's a little cheesy, but a good reminder for me to listen better and not criticize. And I am nearing the end of 'Jesus the Christ' by Talmage, which I have been reading all year (since the Stake President recommended we read it). And of course the final stretch, well sort of, I am starting Alma, in the classic night time read the B of M, which I am trying to finish (5 pages a night and it'll get done) so we can start it again in January with the lesson plan of Sunday School. I sound churchy huh?

On the kiddos, same old, same old, so we need some pictures. I bought batteries yesterday, so no excuses. I will bring the camera to the soccer games, and take some of P too.

See without this blog thing I can't even remember what we did this week, and I don't find myself wanting to do anything interesting for fear of nothing to blog about. I am sort of kidding here. The leaves and thus mountains are really yellow and pretty right now. And I have $5 in my pocket.

Blog Fast

I've seen many of you attempt this, and due to promptings from listening to both Women's Conference and General Conference I am going to attempt a "blog fast" this week. I could be doing so many other things (as Hilbig suggested) and making my home more like the temple (as Sister Beck suggests) and other things. All in good balance, I know, yet I do justify and cherish this space for "journaling". Lates.

Favorite Fall Recipe

If you know me, I've already sent you this at some point, and you know I make it far too often (I love it!). For the newcomers in my life:

Sweet Potato Bisque

4 Tbs. butter
1 large onion, coarsely chopped
1 carrot, coarsely chopped
½ tsp. curry powder
2 pounds red fleshed sweet potatoes, peeled and coarsely chopped
5 cups stock, vegetable or chicken
1 Tbs grated fresh ginger
2 cups crème fraîche
Fine sea salt and white pepper to taste
4 Tbs crystallized ginger for garnish

In a large stock pot, melt butter, sauté onions, carrots, and curry powder until slightly tender, about 5 minutes. Add sweet potatoes and one cup of stock, reduce heat to low, cover with parchment or lid and “sweat” (fancy term for cook) for 15 minutes.
Add remaining stock, bring to a boil, cover, reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
Add and whisk in fresh grated ginger, crème fraîche (or serve on side to dollop on top), remove from heat, season to taste with salt and pepper and puree using an immersion blender, food mill or food processor. Garnish with crystallized ginger.

Serve with a fresh green salad and baguette or as a starter to a heartier meal.

Serena and Lily

Design Mom had a great post (Oct. 3) and I have never before fallen so quickly in love (sorry sweetie, remember we met at the beach and then a few years later we hung out, and then I fell hardest and longest in love, not to worry!). But seriously, I am almost speechless...

I couldn't post a picture of my favorite "Lulu" bedding. The whole collection is simply to die for. Not only are the kiddos names awesome, they fabrics and colors cannot be beat. OM-gosh they sell their fabrics, I am in so much trouble! I am a nerd. Nerd out and Have a look-see for yourself.

Next week I just might be having a fundraiser for a good cause - all in the name of P's Happiness and Spoiledness. All proceeds would go to decorate P's room in Serena and Lily. I promise to keep it clean. Look for details ;)!

Late Grateful Sunday

Today I am grateful for great friends, one of whom I called 20 minutes before Women's Conference, to take her up on her offer of picking me up and going together. Our darling husbands were taking the kids for pancakes & fun anyway (I so wish there was a secret camera watching these two incredible dads and their brood of 6 kiddos at dinner!). So we sat and listened to conference and cried and I was dying for a pen and paper to take notes, it was all so good. I recommitted myself to saying "Yes" to visiting teaching, service, my family, the scriptures, and prayer. I am so lucky and grateful for another amazing woman, also quite stylish, witty, smart, sweet, amazing with kids, my visiting teaching partner Chelsea. Without her, I can honestly say I wouldn't know my "ladies" at all. I am so lucky to be associated with her fire and desire to do right.

Just that day, I was having a tough, tired of living in Utah down time literally thinking I have no role models surrounding me. This now sounds ridiculous as for one I think of the two amazing people mentioned above, two, my very own mother and sisters, mother-in-law and sisters-in-law, and then three, the amazing ladies in scripture class, my bike riding partner Susan, Irene Torres, Becky Pittam, Liz J., Shannon O., I could go on for days! But that night, when Sister Beck, Sister Allred, and Sister Thompson spoke I thought, hello, here are my role models. These are women I can look up to and emulate and aspire to be. They are leaders, they are kind, they have been chosen, they are God-fearing, they are mothers (if even not literally), friends, and sisters. They spoke to me. I am so glad I got my booty down from the snowy plant sale at Red Butte (where I totally lost track of time) and into a skirt in time to catch it all. President Monson wasn't too shabby either (read: amazing!). I simply can't wait for conference this weekend.

So after the conference we met Kate and her Holladay brood of awesome ladies at my one and only as of late go to place Citrus Grill (it is spelled like that right?), and stayed for hours laughing and talking and just enjoyed being a woman.

I am totally cheating (I am actually writing this on Friday, yes, my third entry, my walking group didn't go and it's still dark at 7:01 and I've been waiting since 5:45). Anyhoo.

My Buddy Osterizer

Owen and Morgie at the zoo. You've got to see this pair. He absolutely loves and adores playing with M. It's like watching a giant and a tiny princess play. O loves "skewl". He has a great buddy D, but seems to also be making friends and playing well with others. He's quite the boss, the teacher told me he "reminds" the other kids of the rules when he sees infractions (possibly due to his size mentioned above). He slipped in our newly slick hardwood hallway yesterday and I thought for sure we were headed to the emergency room, but he wailed through a nasty bump on his head. He is a tough kid, with a me-sized temper to match, but 90% of the time really happy and easy going, nice and very flirtatious. As I have said before, he knows a hot broad when he sees one (or you know he's seen one by the way he shows off and his voice goes down a few manly octaves, Kate, Liz J., all 4 Orr girls, V & V, Megan, Cici, to name just a few that can back me up on this). I regrettfully concede that O is no longer taking naps. I think he'll put himself down for one once in a while, and he definitely has an afternoon lay down, but I fear the 2 hour afternoon sleepy-sleep nap is over (it's been a week since his last). Ode to my thumb-sucking, loves to visit and pick tomatoes from E. Hunt, P fan, smiley and fun Owen.

Daddy's Girl

I love Penelope and AK's relationship. They love each other. When he got back from being out of town all last week, I think she was a little "mad" at him, she wouldn't look and smile and giggle at him for a morning or so, but she's back in true Daddy's girl form and I love that. Thanks for the picture Megan.

P.S. Funny story - so Holden went to school today with his carpenter jeans on backwards. Andy discovered this when at about 5 pm they were at the park and AK was pushing him on the swing and noticed. I laughed so hard, I am glad Holden laughed along too and thought it was funny (it could have gone very badly the other way). It was so funny and awesome to see the button and zipper on his bum side. We asked how in the world he went to the bathroom, and he claimed he hadn't all day! I so wish I had a picture.

25% off Spanx the Month of October

Our Junior League is getting a deal on Spanx during the month of October, and you and your blog buddies can too. 25% off your entire order. (JLSLC is getting a kickback, $5 an order, which is a great thing). So, if you are in the market for Spanx, go to the website here and get 25% off your purchase during the month of October. The code/coupon word is salt (exactly as you see it here just salt, not bolded).

For any of you preggers out there, I loved the Spanx maternity tights. They have new bras, the trendy footless things, and the body shapers a certain very skinny sister wore in high school (which I thought was silly, but I guess it was for her hoochie-prom dresses :)). Or splurge for some sexy fish nets!

Brooke S. - Is this you?

Update on E.L.F.: I got my stuff and am super stoked. I was feeling guilty, thinking they probably test on animals or something, but aside from the Made In China (AK was totally Beastie Boys against this for a short time in the late 90's) it's all good, no animal testing, etc. I am super pleased and from others whom I have talked to, they like it too. I guess the Nordstrom link was a rumor and they always have cheap dealios. So I did a good job at the 'Hurry While Supplies Last' advertising, hee hee. So if you are still in the market for make-up, totally give it a shot, you can't go wrong (at $1 a pop!).

California Dreamin'

Confession: I pour, inhale, ingest, adore the show Newport Harbor! Every episode breaks my heart because that was my playground! That is my hometown! They are repeating my memories of adolescence. I miss the ocean, the people, the beauty of the landscapes, buildings, cars, homes, etc. AK found the picture above from the movie site of "One California Day". The pictures are beautiful, the cinematography must be amazing. If you are in California you must go see it. We will be there at the end of October (last weekend and Mon, Tues) by the way. I am planning my days already. And trust me, if I had the choice (financially, my hubby's job) we would so be living there.
